Vista doesn’t need no stinking AntiVirus

13 11 2006

Apparently, the Co-President of Microsoft, who will soon be no longer be such, is boasting that the new Microsoft operating system, Windows Vista, will be so secure out of the box that it will not need anti-virus software to keep your data safe.

Because of the increased Parental Controls and the required authentication windows one has to get through to perform certain system level tasks it will keep your system from being exploited. These new security features were intended to be implemented in XP SP2, however programming conflicts kept it from being so. But one developer managed to figure it out and it will now see the light of day in Windows Vista.

Allchin claims that the security is so good that his seven year old son has been using it on his computer for a while now and he is not afraid of him using it. He claims he has no antivirus software installed, which would be partially to do with the fact that no production-quality release of antivirus software has been produced.

I suppose that we will see soon enough once Vista is officialy released to corporate users at the end of the month. Many IT departments will be hammering hard on the OS to search for vulnerabilities and to find out the viability of implementation in their work environments.

If you have found exploits of this to-be-release operating system, via RC1 or RC2, please let me know. I am curious to know what potential threats could be looming on the horizon for Vista. I work for a College IT Department, and we are going to be gearing soon to determine whether we can implement Vista on our systems and in our network environment, without issues.
