My Predictions for Apple’s Media Event Today
27 01 2010Today’s media event that Apple has sent out invites for begs many questions and has sparked numerous rumor mills to get overloaded. This event has many keeping an eye on Apple to not only find out what Apple’s new “creation” is but also because their first quarter financial results were way above estimates.
So what will we hear from Mr Jobs today? My thoughts:
iPhone OS 4 – available today
iTunes 10 – available today
Mac OS 10.6.2 – available today
*iLife ‘10 – available today
Tablet device – delayed release
Ebooks for sale in App Store – delayed release
*Better Apple TV/ Front Row UI/ integration with media – available today
We’ll see at 1 PM EST today….

Evolution Going Great, Reports Trilobite | The Onion – America’s Finest New
24 01 2010From The Onion | http://www.theonion.com/content/news/evolution_going_great_reports
December 16, 2009 | Issue 45•51
Slowly inching his segmented exoskeleton across the sea floor, a local marine arthropod, class Trilobita, reported that Earth’s natural evolution was “progressing quite nicely.”
“Things are looking mighty fine,” announced the prehistoric invertebrate, taking measure of his surroundings through a series of small, hexagonal eyelets located at the tip of his thorax. “Sulfurous gas seems to be bubbling up to the surface pretty good, and several single-cell organisms appear to be mutating at a rather steady pace. Also, just today, I developed the ability to roll into a small protective shell in order to avoid predators.”
Added the trilobite, “Yup, this evolution thing is going great.”
According to the 4-inch-wide arthropod, the entire planet—once nothing more than a large, tedious mass of molten rock—has really taken shape recently. Clearing a swath of nourishing algae from his glabella, the excited prehistoric organism went on to report that a number of interesting changes had occurred, including the sprouting of several new microbial communities, and the development of a process known only as photosynthesis, which the trilobite called “hard to explain, but really, really cool.”
In addition, the trilobite said, the shifting of tectonic plates, and with them, the birth of new mountain ranges, river valleys, and coastlines, seemed to be coming along great.
“It’s a wonderful time to be alive,” said the tri-lobed creature, its protruding feelers and antennules twitching spasmodically with anticipation. “To be born during this, the Cambrian Explosion—why, I couldn’t imagine a better period, really. It’s all happening right now! I mean, if things keep going the way they’re going, what with evolution taking off and everything, pretty soon we’ll have huge, towering reptiles roaming across the earth.”
“Can you imagine it? Reptiles!” the trilobite added. “I’m not even sure what those are!”
The trilobite then settled down in his murky lagoon, where for the third straight night he would rest soundly while thoughts of someday becoming a brine shrimp, or perhaps even a crustacean—each of which, he knew, would be just a small part of the beautiful upward arc of life, forever changing, forever moving toward balance and harmony—danced in his tiny, insignificant head.

Star Wars Opening Scene Rendered Entirely in HTML [VIDEO]
23 01 2010What you are about to see is not done in Flash or Quicktime or any other video technology. It’s the iconic Star Wars opening scene — where the backstory text scrolls by and recedes away from you — rendered entirely using the HTML and CSS standards that are used to build the vast majority of web pages you see online.

Rumor Has It: Are These the Specs for the Apple Tablet?
4 01 2010Is this a look what the forthcoming Apple Tablet will possess???
Other hardware niceties include two USB 2.0 ports, an SD card slot, built-in speakers and mic and a combined digital/headphone out and line in like that found on the newest MacBook Pros. The screen is listed as 7.1 inches and boasts the same oleophobic coating found on the iPhone 3GS.
But here’s where it gets weird. In addition to the built-in iSight (not weird), there’s a built-in projector listed too (very weird). And the Airport Extreme is said to be based on the 802.11n draft specification, when we all know that specification was finalized in September. Also, no mention is made of 3G connectivity, something which has been making the rounds recently.

How to Teach With Google Wave!
4 01 2010Fascinating use of Google Wave. Check the rest of the article out at the link below:
Think of it like bringing in a guest speaker. But with Wave, which is like e-mail but live and jazzed up with multimedia features, you can build online communities that link entire classrooms for a week or two. And you can do it without the administrative headaches of booking rooms or adjusting class schedules…..
… But what if you merged a biology class and a philosophy class? You could have them evaluate a bioethics case study, suggests Mr. Schroeder, director of the university’s Center for Online Learning, Research, and Service. Or what about a class on Asian history? You could use Wave’s translation tool and hook up with a group of Chinese students….
Google can’t get this into full production fast enough, in my humble opinion. Not to mention getting the Open Source code available to be installed on a private server. This will open the door to communication between, teams, departments, instituations, clients, and beyond. Heck, it could prove to be a viable tool for extended families to communicate with. [that is, the extended families that are many miles apart and rarely see each other. Of course that would require teaching those family members how to use Google Wave who are just getting up to speed with email and IM. Though this could be easier than email and IM when the product is finished.]

Stainless: The New, Multi-Processor Browser for Mac OS X
30 12 2009Stainless: The New, Multi-Processor Browser for Mac OS X.
Stainless is based on Webkit: same speed of Safari, same engine, same everything. It’s Safari in the core, just another thing to your eyes. What I like most about it it’s that you can opt to run tabs as single processes: much like Chrome does, every tab is independent from the rest of the browser and runs as a standalone process in Activity Monitor.

Proposal: Congressional Reform Act of 2010
29 12 2009Do you want to know how to enact “Change” in our government. “Change” that will actually make a positive difference in the American way of life that more closely resembles what our Founding Fathers envisioned when they drafted the Constitution of the United States of America?
Proposal: Congressional Reform Act of 2010
1. Term Limits: 8 years only, one of the possible options below.
A. Two Four year Senate terms
B. Four Two year House terms
C. One Four year Senate term and One Four Year House terms
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
2. No Tenure / No Pension:
A congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security:
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund moves to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, Congress participates with the American people.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, server your term(s), then go home and back to work.
4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan just as all Americans.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
7. Congress must equally abide in all laws they impose on the American people.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
8. All contracts with past and present congressmen are void effective 1/1/11.
The American people did not make this contract with congressmen, congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
Please comment with your thoughts. Do you Agree or Disagree with this Proposal?

Conficker worm to become a bigger threat in 2010
8 12 2009Great! The nasty Windows bug, Conficker, is going to continue to be an ongoing threat to IT support everywhere.
“BitDefender researchers predict that Conficker will become an even bigger threat in 2010 by:
The corruption of defensive systems – Conficker will completely neutralize defensive systems and will leave dangerous security internet breaches on user networks.
Distributed denial of service – By paralyzing computers over the Internet, Conficker will prevent the access to particular Web sites for extended periods of time.
Pay-per-click system abuse and fraud – Conficker will be used to visit specific Web sites and will automatically “click” on advertisement banners with the intent of obtaining information for financial gain.
Key logging, traffic monitoring and mass identity theft – Conficker, like many botnets, will be programmed to monitor keyboard activity and collect keystrokes to gain access to users’ personal information.
Spamming – Conficker will harvest e-mail addresses, which will be used to send a massive amounts of spam messages to other computers. “
